August 15th: The Significance of Our Freedom and Sacrifices
August 15th: Is not just an ordinary date
To us Indians, August 15th is not just an ordinary date on the calendar; to us, this day is a symbol of freedom. This is the day when, after 200 years of struggle, India attained freedom from British rule way back in 1947.
It has been 77 years since we got freedom after 200 years of subjugation under British rule. Our freedom fighters fought day and night, leaving their life behind so that we could be able to live in an independent country because of their efforts alone.
Independence Day (August 15th) means so much more than just a date.
Nevertheless to me, Independence Day (August 15th) means so much more than just a date. It recalls how much we, as a nation, have risen. It reminds one of hundreds of thousands of freedom fighters who made independence possible. Had it not been for their acts of courage and unyielding determination, we wouldn’t be breathing freely today, working according to our own will, and expressing ourselves without any sort of problems.
For many of us, August 15th has always been a day to reflect on the journey of our nation.
August 15th has always been a day to rummage through the journey of our nation for most of us. Looking back at the hurdles that were crossed, the distances covered, and the miles that would be covered in times to come, it is a day of pride—our country, our heritage, and our freedom. We celebrate by hoisting the tricolor and singing the national anthem with gusto, reminiscent of those who struggled so hard for our independence.
Yet Independence Day (August 15th) is not only a day of looking back
Yet Independence Day (August 15th) is not only a day of looking back; it is also one of looking forward. It is the time to ponder over what type of future we want to fashion for India. This day reminds us of our general responsibility for ensuring that freedom, democracy, and unity are upheld—values that were won for us through the sacrifices of our forefathers.
From different corners of the country, people come together and rejoice. Be it flag hoisting, cultural programs, or time with family and friends—the day, August 15th, unites all. However different we may be on that day, we stand united by the love we share for India.
On August 15th, let’s honor our freedom and sacrifices.
On this Independence Day (August 15th), let us take one moment to appreciate the freedom we enjoy today and pay homage to those who made those selfless sacrifices that led to it. Let us commit to doing our bit toward a better, stronger, more united India.
